Abstract:
One goal of this research is to find better ways to extrapolate and compute the tails of distributions of sea state parameters. In order to achieve this goal, this paper suggests using a Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) transformation method. The main findings are provided below. The method is applied to forecast the probability distribution tails of four ocean wave datasets measured at three National Data Buoy Center Stations. When compared to the parametric method's prediction results, the suggested method's accuracy is confirmed. Two of the previously described wave datasets are then used in conjunction with the transformation KDE approach to derive precise 50-year environmental contour lines. In order to forecast the PTO (Power-Take-Off) force values for a point absorber Wave Energy Converter (WEC) over the course of 50 years, the determined environmental contour lines together with other contour lines acquired by a parametric contour technique are then used. With a predicted 50-year design PTO force value of 3362900 N derived from one of the suggested transformation KDE contours—whose accuracy has been demonstrated in this paper—the WEC PTO system will undoubtedly be more reliable and safe.
